At the time when Late Smt. Malatibai Joshi proposed it, educational facilities for children with hearing impairment were limited. Yet, our Founders- Late Mrs. Kamaltai Nagarkar and Mrs. Kusumtai Godbole ventured to establish Suhrud Mandal on 1st August 1973, starting modestly at the residence of Late Mr. Bapusaheb Nagarkar and Mrs. Kamaltai Nagarkar.
Suhrud Mandal established 39 schools across 15 districts of Maharashtra between 1976 and 2000 recognizing the need to “reach the unreached.” In those years, volunteers conducted surveys in rural parts of Maharashtra to identify children with hearing impairment. Whenever a considerable number of children were found in a region, Suhrud Mandal collaborated with local NGOs to establish special schools in those areas through its ‘Home Training Program’. Suhrud Mandal provided the financial and educational assistance for the first three years, after which the schools were handed over to local level agencies. Many of these schools continue to function successfully even today.
Suhrud school students do not need to pay any tuition fees and are additionally provided free of cost transport, hearing aids, uniforms, books, stationary and mid-day meals.
All the schools are equipped with soundproof rooms and modern equipment for hearing assessment and speech correction testing.
The institution also encourages students to actively participate in various competitions and extracurricular activities.
We strictly adhere to all the stipulations of Social Welfare Department in conducting our day-to-day activities as also follow our own code of good practices.
Considering the growing need for schooling as well as training facilities across the Pune region, Suhrud Mandal has established various educational centers over the years
